More than likely I will get a lot of backlash on this. Recently in design, there is a big drive to get into big successful extraordinary tech companies like Google, Facebook or start-ups that suppose to be changing the world. Considered great career prestige to get into one of these companies. This career path has now become an aspiration for a lot of designers.
However, it is also ok to be an ordinary designer at an ordinary company. If you are doing great design work, that is satisfying and challenging you professionally. In a work environment that is great, then you are doing just fine. Mastery of a craft is not from the places you have worked but from the experiences you gain and the hours you put in. You can always be an extra-ordinary designer instead.
There is no need to feel crazy pressured to do what everyone else is aspiring to do. No matter how passionate you are about design it is still a job and a role. Hate to be grim but should you die your position will be open for hiring a few days after. There is more to life.
